Shakespeare Behind the Scenes at Union Market

Friday, October 04, 2019, 5:30 pm
Politics and Prose at Union Market | 1270 5th Street NE, Washington, DC 20002

Presented in partnership with Politics and Prose. Choose between sessions on September 13 or October 4 from 5:30pm - 6:30pm. Classes held at Politics and Prose at Union Market.

When Shakespeare wrote his plays, it is unlikey he had any clue that hundreds of years later some people might view them the way a child views brussel sprouts: good for you, but no fun at all.

Actress Kate Eastwood Norris will give participants a backstage pass into Shakespeare's plays and the inner workings of an art that we often elevate right out of our grasp. Using Shakespeare's 1 Henry IV (on stage at Folger Theatre from September 3 - October 13) as a map for performance rather than as strictly literature, more than themes and characters will be revealed. Through discussion, anecdotes, and a taste (or two) of on-your-feet text exploration, participants will gain a recognition of details vital to the performer, audience member, or reader. This class will ignite your imagination and deepen your theatergoing experience for years to come — whether the performances you attend are written by Shakespeare, Sondheim, or Shaw.

Sign up for the class and receive a discount code for $10 off tickets to any performance of 1 Henry IV

Attend a 30-minute post-show discussion with Eastwood Norris on October 5 (approximately 4:30pm)
