These classes are presented in partnership with Politics and Prose, with two dates offered. Choose between sessions on September 13 or October 4 from 5:30pm - 6:30pm each night. Classes will be held at Politics and Prose Union Market Bookstore location.
When Shakespeare wrote his plays, it is unlikey he had any clue that hundreds of years later some people might view them the way a child views brussel sprouts: good for you, but no fun at all.
The class, with actress Kate Eastwood Norris offered in partnership with Politics and Prose and Folger Theatre, will give students a backstage pass into Shakespeare's plays and the inner workings of an art that we often elevate right out of our grasp. Using Shakespeare's 1 Henry IV (on stage at the Folger from September 3 - October 13) as a map for performance rather than as strictly literature, more than themes and characters will be revealed. Through discussion, anecdotes, and a taste (or two) of on-your-feet script exploration, we will gain a recognition of details vital to the performer, audience member, or reader. This coursework will ignite your imagination and deepen your theatergoing experience for years to come — whether the performances you attend are written by Shakespeare, Sondheim, or Shaw.
When you sign up for the class you will receive a discount code for $10 off tickets to any performance of 1 Henry IV during its theatrical run (September 3 - October 13, 2019).
All registrants are also invited to attend a 30-minute discussion with Eastwood Norris after the October 5, 2pm performance of 1 Henry IV. The discussion will begin at approximate 4:30pm.
