Ellen MacKay

Ellen MacKay

The new Director of Indiana University’s Institute for the Digital Arts and Humanities, Ellen MacKay focuses her research on the philosophy of performance that underwrites the plays of Shakespeare and his contemporaries—particularly, how players and playgoers understood the distinction between life and show. She is also the resident dramaturg for Cardinal Stage and the author of Persecution, Plague, and Fire. Her work explores some of the more challenging aspects of stage productions, including onstage animals, gunfire, waterworks, and pyrotechnics.
