The Folger Spotlight

DCanter's Mulled Wine

Folger Consort is thrilled to be welcoming back audiences for in-person performances this December. Our 2021 holiday concert, A Medieval Christmas, began performances on December 10 and continues through December 18. A special filmed version of this concert will be available for on-demand viewing from the comfort of your home beginning December 17.

To celebrate this cherished Yuletide tradition, we’re bringing you a mulled wine recipe from our friends at DCanter. Join them 1pm-4pm, December 18 and 19, to try it yourself!

  • 4 ¼ cups (1L) Fruity, Dry Red Wine
  • 2 Large Oranges, one sliced, one peeled into strips and juiced
  • 1 ¼ cup (10 oz) Brandy
  • ½ cup Dark Brown Sugar
  • 2 Cinnamon Sticks
  • 6 Cloves
  • 3 Cardamom Pods

  1. In a large saucepan, combine all ingredients (except the orange slices) over medium heat until sugar dissolves. Increase heat to high and bring to a boil, then immediately reduce to a simmer for about 30 minutes.
  2. Strain and serve with orange slice garnish.

Not feeling up to preparing something from scratch? Our neighbors at Hill’s Kitchen have mulling spices for a useful assist. Either way, you’ll a good red wine to start with—DCanter recommends this Sabeo Garnacha 2019.

From: Catalonia, Spain

Description: Harmonious and playful on the palate, this juicy and quaffable wine shows off red berries of all sorts with a touch of spicy heat.

Pairs with: A perfect match for pizza or Mediterranean fare, it’s also a fun wine to drink on its own.
