Overview

Folger Consort’s anniversary season opens with a dramatic evening at the Kennedy Center featuring renowned actors Derek Jacobi and Richard Clifford. Inspired by a 1699 adaptation of Measure for Measure, or Beauty the Best Advocate by Charles Gildon staged in Restoration London, this concert pairs the ravishing music of Henry Purcell’s Dido and Aeneas with timeless passages from Shakespeare’s play. With orchestra and chorus, soloists Peter Becker, Emily Noël, Molly Quinn, John Taylor Ward, and actors including Derek Jacobi, Richard Clifford, Shirine Babb, and Owiso Odera.

Read the Shakespeare and Beyond blog post from scholar Richard Schoch on the workshop that inspired Measure+Dido and what he learned about Measure for Measure as a result.

Folger Consort Co-Artistic Director, Robert Eisenstein, give audiences a preview of the music in this Shakespeare and Beyond post.
