About Shakespeare Quarterly
Shakespeare Quarterly (SQ) is a leading journal in Shakespeare studies, publishing highly original, rigorously researched essays, notes, and book reviews. Published for the Folger Shakespeare Library by the Oxford University Press (OUP), SQ is peer-reviewed and very selective.
The essays in our published pages span the field and feature readings of Shakespeare’s works influenced by queer and gender studies, premodern critical race studies (PCRS), textual studies, theater history, and archival, new media, and historicist approaches. Our mission, simply put, is to present the best scholarship on Shakespeare.

Call for Editors: Shakespeare Quarterly
Shakespeare Quarterly invites applications for co-editors or an editorial team for the journal. Rather than a single lead editor, we invite applications either in the form of three-person teams, or from individuals willing to be part of the three-person editorial team. Editors will receive a modest annual stipend, funds for travel related to the journal, and the support of the journal’s salaried staff managing editor and copy editor/fact checker; editors may arrange to receive additional support from their home institutions.
We envision this team of editors helping to set the tone for SQ by soliciting and selecting individual essays and special issues that match the current mission and future vision of the journal and the fields of Shakespeare and early modern studies. The editorial team will be tasked with sustaining and expanding Shakespeare Quarterly’s reputation as a flagship journal in our fields.
The editors of SQ will be responsible for tasks that include: soliciting and screening submissions to the journal; matching submissions with reviewers and overseeing the peer review process; maintaining and making visible equitable processes of peer review; communicating with authors about editorial decisions and offering developmental editorial support where needed in cases of revision; liaising with the managing editor, copy editor, the press, and the Folger library as part of the formal production systems; meeting production deadlines and delivering content to meet those deadlines; tracking and assessing data related to the journal; coordinating and communicating with the editorial board; and representing the journal at conferences, workshops, etc.
Please use this form to apply as an individual willing to be matched with a team or as an already-formed proposed team. Note that the application will prompt you to upload CV(s) and a vision statement. The prompt for the vision statement will ask the individual or group to address the following questions:
- What contribution do you principally envision SQ making to the broad field of Shakespeare studies?
- How might SQ best contribute to ongoing study of Shakespeare and best maintain, sustain, and intervene in the international project that is early modern studies?
- What steps do you see the editorial team taking to advance the current mission of SQ?
- How might that mission evolve in the future?
- What operational steps might you take to ensure equitable access and opportunities for all members of the profession?
- How will you make SQ feel like a welcoming home to the broadest range of scholars in our fields?
Applications for the co-editorial positions are due by September 30; a virtual interview will follow for finalists for the positions. Applications will be reviewed by the Executive Subcommittee of the SQ Editorial Board. Please direct questions to Dr. Patricia Akhimie (pakhimie@folger.edu) or reach out to any member of the Editorial Board to find out more.
