Reading Room policies

What’s permitted inside the library

The Reading Room is a space dedicated to research and discovery. Its purpose is centered on access to collections and resources unique to this library. Activities within the space must be consistent with the room’s intended purpose.

Rules

The following rules apply to everyone entering the Reading Room:

Photograph items, not people

You are NOT allowed to photograph the Reading Room and the people in it during research hours. However, you are welcome to take pictures of collection items without flash. Tag your collection pictures on social media with #FolgerFinds.

Wash and dry hands

Before entering the Reading Room, wash and dry your hands, so that oil from your hands (or from lotion) does not damage collection materials.

Maintain quiet

Be respectful of your fellow researchers and keep talking to a minimum, silence all devices, and take any calls outside of the Reading Room.

Allowed items

The following items ARE allowed in the Reading Room.

  • Pencils
  • Laptops, tablets, cameras, cell phones, headphones/earbuds, and chargers
  • Loose leaf paper, file folders, and notebooks
  • One Folger- supplied clear bag to carry your loose items

Folger-provided tools

Once you’re in the Reading Room, certain tools are available to make research easier and more comfortable. These include rulers, item supports, magnifying glasses, pencils, and more. Email reference@folger.edu if you have any questions.

Prohibited items

The following items are NOT allowed in the Reading Room. This list is comprehensive but not exhaustive. Folger staff may have more questions and ask you to leave additional items in your locker. Your cooperation is essential, and we appreciate your support.

  • Food and drink, including bottled water, cough drops, and chewing gum
  • Pens, colored pencils, highlighters, or markers
  • Bags and zippered pouches of any kind or size
  • Your own books, newspapers, or magazines
  • Scissors, holepunches, or anything that cuts
  • Tape, sticky notes, or anything that sticks
  • Coats or other bulky clothing, and jewelry that could interfere with your ability to safely work with the collection
  • Cosmetics and lotions

Why can’t I bring cough drops, cosmetics, or pens into the Reading Room?

Things that cut, sticky stuff, things that could stain, and many other everyday objects could leave permanent marks or otherwise harm collection material. By leaving these items in your locker, you help prevent damage to the collection.
