Join Folger Shakespeare Library Director Dr. Farah Karim-Cooper as she offers insights into Shakespeare’s As You Like It. The play divides itself between court and nature, and characters from different classes interact differently within the forest of Arden than they do in the environment of court life. Dr. Karim-Cooper will speak to Folger Theatre’s current production and share how the play resonates today.
About As You Like It
As You Like It, envisioned by Artistic Director Karen Ann Daniels, is one of the most beloved Shakespearean comedies.
Rosalind and her cousin Celia are forced to leave the court where they find respite and adventure in nature, inevitably succumbing to the madness of love and delightfully unpredictable circumstances.
This production offers a love note to DC, imbuing the forest of Arden with the familiar vibes, culture, and characters that mark the District as a singular, resilient, and redemptive place of belonging.
Dr. Farah Karim-Cooper
Dr. Farah Karim-Cooper is the eighth director of the Folger Shakespeare Library in Washington DC. The Folger opened in 1932 as a home to the monumental collection of Shakespeare’s works and materials from the early modern world amassed by founders Henry and Emily Folger. Today, Dr. Karim-Cooper leads a staff of around 150 who continue to grow and care for the collection, provide opportunities for research and scholarship, program the Folger’s Elizabethan-style theatre, offer training and classes for educators and students, and operate museum galleries and a café. As the Folger approaches its second century, Dr. Karim-Cooper is positioning the organization as an international leader for practical applications of Shakespeare and the humanities in civic life.
