The Lord Vernon Copy

The tour nickname for First Folio number 22 is the "Lord Vernon" copy. The First Folio belonged to George John Venables, fifth Baron Vernon, in the mid-1850s. It then remained in the family until 1918, when Henry and Emily Folger acquired the book at a Sotheby’s sale for $11,000. Other than several defective leaves in the introduction, which have been repaired, this is a complete First Folio.

In the Folger exhibition celebrating the nationwide tour, this First Folio is open to Julius Caesar—one of 18 plays in the First Folio that had not been printed before and could have been lost.

The Delaware exhibition was about how the First Folio was made, including how to make an engraving like the one of Shakespeare on its title page. This image, William, William, shows a copperplate and a print. Both are based on a digital image of the portrait in a Second Folio (a later edition of the First Folio) from Special Collections at the University of Delaware Library.
