Shakespeare & Beyond

Quiz: Who said (or wrote) that?

Do you ever enjoy a quotation, but can’t figure out who said or wrote it? If someone does not know the answer, they sometimes credit it to William Shakespeare—even if the person who came up with the line is a well-known figure who may have lived centuries after Shakespeare did. If Shakespeare didn’t write it, who did? Try our quiz to see who really said or wrote these notable lines.

Needless to say, Shakespeare is not the only writer to whom quotes are misattributed. American-sounding quotes are often falsely said to be by Mark Twain, perhaps as a way of adding to their cachet, and political insights are attributed to a variety of figures, including President Abraham Lincoln. But for Shakespeare, at least, it is easy to look it up. Go to the Folger Shakespeare editions, which include all of Shakespeare’s works. Enter a key word or phrase from the quotation Shakespeare is said to have written in the search box to check for yourself. If the word or phrase is in Shakespeare’s works, you’ll see where it appears in the plays or poems—and can read it there.
