Online Community Standards

The Folger’s social media pages are a part of the Folger community. We use these platforms to share our work and to engage with people around the globe who want to learn more about Shakespeare’s life, work, and world. We welcome your participation using the guidelines below.

When you engage with our social media accounts or posts, you agree to abide by our community standards, which apply in addition to the terms and conditions or other legal notices that are provided by the social media platform.

We want to foster an online community that is appropriate, enjoyable, and welcoming for anyone interested in the Folger and our work. To that end, we expect members of our community to treat one another with respect, and to engage with the Folger and with each other in good faith. Users may disagree with ideas expressed in posted content, comments, or responses. However, we prohibit any form of harassment, insult, or threat. We will not tolerate comments or users that deny others’ humanity. On our pages, we will not accept comments, responses, or posts that discriminate against individuals or groups on the basis of race, religion, national or ethnic origin, color, sex, sexual preference or orientation, gender identification, age, or physical or mental disability. We will not accept posts, comments, or responses that are otherwise inappropriate, offensive, profane, inflammatory, or defamatory. We will not accept disruptive, misleading, or irrelevant posts, comments, or responses, nor will we accept spam.

The Folger reserves the right to delete and/or report, to the full extent that the respective social media platform allows, any post or comment that we believe, in our sole discretion, violates these standards.

We will block users who willfully or repeatedly violate our community standards.

Please bear in mind that comments and responses you may read on our social media pages that are not posted by us come from members of the public. The contents of these comments or responses (including opinions and statements) do not necessarily reflect the views of the Folger and are the responsibility of the individuals posting them.

Remember that your posts and comments on our social media pages will be public. Do not share or post any personal or sensitive information about yourself or others that you would not want to make public or generally available. Even if you delete a post, it may already have been viewed by others and may still be available through search engines.

We may report comments, posts, or responses to the social media platform or law enforcement if we have a good faith belief that disclosing such information is reasonably necessary to protect the safety of the public or an individual.

We are excited to share the Folger and its work with you: as Shakespeare wrote in Henry VI, Part 1, “Thy friendship makes us fresh, and doth beget new courage in our breasts.” Thank you for helping us to create an online Folger community that is fun, educational, and welcoming to all.
