Folger Consort is the award-winning early music ensemble-in-residence at the Folger Shakespeare Library. Founding artistic directors Robert Eisenstein and Christopher Kendall established the ensemble in 1977, and continue to create programs that offer opportunities to discover and enjoy music from the Medieval, Renaissance, and Baroque periods. Folger Consort's 2019/20 season highlights the breadth of early music from Italy—featuring music of Machiavelli's Florence, Vivaldi and Corelli at Christmas, masterworks by Palestrina and Monteverdi, and more—with renowned guest artists including vocal ensemble Stile Antico.

The upcoming season shines light on an often neglected repertoire by presenting music composed by women. This includes Raffaella Aleotti, a composer and organist who was the first woman to publish a collection of sacred music; Leonora d'Este, the daughter of the noblewoman Lucrezia Borgia; and Barbara Strozzi, who during her lifetime was one of Venice's most prolific composers. These are just some of the remarkable stories and music that will be shared and celebrated at this season's concerts.
