Folger Guides to Teaching Shakespeare

This new series offers educators fresh insights, innovative tools, and detailed lesson plans for teaching some of Shakespeare’s most frequently taught plays.

Applications Now Open for the 2026 Teaching Shakespeare Institute

Applications are now open for the 2026 Teaching Shakespeare Institute (TSI), the Folger Shakespeare Library’s flagship professional development program for teachers, offered every other summer. From June 28–July 17, 2026, we will welcome a new cohort of passionate and curious educators for a three-week immersive experience. Together we will explore Romeo and Juliet and Antony and Cleopatra with support from leading scholars, Folger Mentor Teachers, and access to the unparalleled Folger collection.

Established more than four decades ago, TSI has a proven track record as a transformational professional program for teachers who want to deepen their content knowledge, strengthen their classroom practice, and join a collaborative community of educators who care deeply about the humanities. Participants learn through hands-on engagement with rare materials and collections items, performance-based approaches, seminar-style study, and shared inquiry. The institute is supported by the National Endowment for the Humanities, and all accepted teachers receive a stipend to support their participation.

Teaching with the Folger Method

The Folger Method is a way of teaching complex texts that enables all students to own—and enjoy—the process of reading closely, interrogating texts, discovering language with peers, and contributing to the ongoing human conversation about words and ideas. It is a radical engine for equity that teachers consistently call “transformative.”
