Graduate degree in English or Education, Ph.D. or Ed.D. or equivalent experience preferred. Leadership skills and ability to set and articulate goals, while working collaboratively and effectively with the Senior Directors, as well as the diverse community of educational partners--foundations, educational institutions and organizations, teachers, library visitors, staff and volunteers. Ability to build, organize, and lead a staff through excellent management and supervisory skills. Excellent communication skills required. Ability to think and act imaginatively to connect the library’s collection, activities and resources to diverse audiences of teachers and students. Skill in budgeting and managing resources.
Minimum of seven years experience in successful program leadership, development, management, and assessment for a national educational or cultural organization. Teaching experience at elementary or secondary level and experience providing professional development training required. Broad knowledge of national educational trends and a thorough understanding of Shakespeare are essential. Experience with curriculum development required, along with an understanding of when and how digital media may be productively introduced into teaching. Direct supervision of Education staff - currently three full-time employees and one part time employee. Oversees 2-3 contractors. Indirect supervision of docents, teaching artists, etc.
Working with other Senior Directors, provide creative and strategic direction to the Folger’s local, national, and online educational programs, advancing its standing as a trusted educational guide to Shakespeare and his early modern world. Develop innovative programming that supports the Folger’s educational mission, engaging students, teachers and the public with a variety of media while advancing the Folger’s philosophy of performance based education. Expand national
programming and partnership initiatives. Further the Folger mission to advance understanding and appreciation of Shakespeare's writings and of the culture of early modern Europe in general for all students.
Working closely with Senior Directors, creates and implements multimedia approaches to education. Creates accessible resources that tie in public programs, exhibitions, and other divisions within the Folger. Oversees the creation of Folger K-12 educational online/print resources in light of potential partners and delivery streams.
Enhance and ensure the continuing relevance and visibility of Folger education programs, establish and/or maintain relationships with leaders in the K-12 education world at large, including; schools and colleges of education, teachers’ professional associations, education technology initiatives, arts and humanities initiatives, current and potential donors. Represent the Folger by participating in national associations and conferences as well as local events; speak and publish, as appropriate.
With the Director of Public Programs and the Director of Digital Access, and in concert with Folger’s other public initiatives, develop and direct education staff in creation of opportunities for the general community, including family programs, website activities, and talks/discussions which might be offered in conjunction with Folger programs.
Direct and/or oversee existing national programs, ensuring high-quality content, maintaining funding requirements, and creating effective growth in the context of the Folger and its other programs. Current national programs include:
• The month-long, NEH-funded summer Teaching Shakespeare Institute (since 1984, generally offered bi-annually), which brings secondary school teachers from across the country together to design curricula for the teaching of Shakespeare through collaboration with scholars, master teachers, and actors and primary research with the Folger collection.
• The Folger Shakespeare Education and Festival Project (Shakesperience: NJ), which trains and assists school systems in creating successful Shakespeare festivals modeled on the Folger local program.
• A variety of workshops, projects, and programs providing professional development onsite and online in one day or multi-day formats.
Actively represent Folger and contribute to the Washington community with effective education programs in the schools and on-site for students as well as teachers. Direct and/or oversee local programs, including:
• Shakespeare Steps Out for grades 3-6
• Children’s Festival for grades 3-6
• Secondary School Shakespeare Festival for grades 7-12
• High School Fellowship Program
• Teacher/student workshops
• Bill’s Buddies educational acting troupe
• Workshops and materials accompanying Folger Theatre student matinees
Take a primary role in visitor services and other educational opportunities for the general audience—on site and on the web. Collaborate with Folger colleagues and docents to enhance visitor services, including supporting exhibitions and visitor publications, notably family and children’s guides.
Oversee the management of the volunteer Folger Docent program, the volunteers who greet visitors and offer tours and other services to introduce Folger exhibitions and programs. Supervises the Docent Liaison who coordinates a separately organized group with by-laws and accounting system.
Responsible for department budget. Work with the Director of Development and development staff to explore and make full use of opportunities for expanding funding base for current and future Folger education programs. Assist in the preparation of grant applications to secure funding. With development and the business offices, manage education grant projects and budget reporting.
Serve as the primary Folger representative in the partnership between the Folger and Alabama Public Television. Chairs the committee to approve Folger division project proposals for Alabama Television produced media and periodically provides updates on work being done to the Director and Senior Directors. Book Conservator

The Folger Shakespeare Library, in Washington, D.C., is seeking qualified candidates for the permanent, fulltime, exempt position as a Book Conservator to work in the Werner Gundersheimer Conservation Laboratory. The Book Conservator works under the direction of the Eric Weinmann Head of Conservation and with a small team of conservators. The Book Conservator will have primary responsibility for complex treatments of rare bound material items from the Folger’s printed book and manuscript collection and participates in all activities carried out by the conservation lab including exhibition and loan preparation and installation.
Qualifications
• B.A. or equivalent experience required and at least six additional years of hands-on, specialized book and paper conservation experience.
• Excellent handskills related to conservation treatments.
• Sound knowledge of organic and physical chemistry as applied to conservation and preservation treatments required.
• Thorough understanding of the history of the book, the chemistry of materials and the ability to recognize and analyze damages to rare materials and select and perform appropriate treatments.
• Competency using advanced technical equipment related to conservation practice including photography equipment.
• Experience in exhibition preparation and installation as well as designing and creating bookmounts preferred.
• Excellent interpersonal and communication skills necessary.
• Ability to solve problems, organize time, set priorities and work independently.
• Proficiency with computer programs like Word, Excel, Power Point and Photo Shop. Experience with FilemakerPro would be advantageous.
Normal working hours Monday through Friday, 9:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m. with flexibility required for special conservation projects.

Development Services Coordinator

The Folger Shakespeare Library is seeking a Development Services Coordinator, a key member of the Folger's dynamic fundraising team. Working closely with the entire Development team, the Development Services Coordinator leads gift processing and database management. Duties include but are not limited to: tracking all gifts and managing donor records, analyzing data to determine success of fundraising efforts, and generating lists for membership renewals, annual mailings, appeals, and event invitations. Stewards donors by generating gift receipts and acknowledgements.
B.A. required. Minimum two years' experience with annual giving, gift tracking/processing, and/or data management and manipulation, preferably in a cultural institution. Necessary skills include: excellent organization, time management, data analysis, writing and interpersonal communication, as well as superb attention to accuracy and detail. Successful candidates must have experience with databases and data entry, knowledge of Raiser's Edge and Tessitura is highly desirable. Knowledge of Microsoft Word and Excel is required.

Communications Associate

The Folger Shakespeare Library is seeking an experienced Communications Associate.
Under the direction of the Head of External Relations, this position advances the Folger Shakespeare Library and its programs and activities to the general public, scholars, and students and teachers in K-12. The Communications Associate has particular responsibility for promoting the Folger online through the library’s website, social media, blogs, e-news, and other digital tools. Interacts with staff at all levels of the institution as well as with consultants and vendors. In the absence of the Head of External Relations, the Communications Associate acts as media spokesman for the Folger and its programs.
Duties include, but are not limited to: planning marketing/promotional campaigns, writing press releases, pitching the media, and event management. Developing content for Folger social media, blogs, and websites, including conception and design, editing/writing, and creation of video and audio components. The Communication Associate produces bi-weekly e-newsletter for general audiences; targeted e-marketing; and written content for the Folger Magazine. Normal working hours Monday through Friday, 9:00 a.m.-5:00 p.m., with additional hours as needed.
B.A. required, preferably in English or Journalism/Communications. Minimum of two years’ professional experience required. Experience with public and media relations required. The Folger Shakespeare Library is seeking an experienced Administrative Assistant (AA). This position supports the Director of Public Programs and other division staff in the management of active season of events, including Folger Theatre, Folger Consort, Folger Poetry, PEN/Faulkner, and other public outreach activities. Duties include but are not limited to: Drafts reports, tracks projects, and keeps files in good order, participates in marketing activities by managing online calendars, assisting in flyer and ad development, editing and/or proofreading materials, manages work of division's interns, takes and distributes minutes of meetings, answers correspondence, makes and takes telephone calls, monitors office supplies and equipment maintenance, and with general manager, ensures that accounts payable are processed weekly. The AA organizes and oversees pre-performance evening talks and events and serves as Folger Public Programs representative at other venues. Manuscript Project Photographer

The Folger Shakespeare Library is seeking a part-time Project Photographer for Early Modern Manuscripts.
B.A. degree required, major in photography or studio art desired. One to two years training and experience in the use of digital imaging software required, with thorough knowledge of Adobe Photoshop CS5 or later. Experience operating digital imaging equipment and working with digital images required. Ability to make fine distinctions between color hues and database experience required. Must have ability to work independently and as part of a team. Must have excellent communication, organization, and interpersonal skills. A high degree of accuracy is required for all work.
Under the direction of the Head of Photography and Digital Imaging, the Manuscript Project Photographer scans flat unbound 16th and 17th century manuscripts from the library's collection. Duties include, but are not limited to, creating master digital images, adding copyright and shelfmark metadata to each, and preparing first derivative digital images using color management and imaging software. Applies color profiles, corrects for color, and sharpens images. Crops and centers images and creates white backgrounds. Checks all images at 100% and corrects for scanning artifacts. Tracks and identifies images in progress with image management software and databases. Grant funded position for up to one year. Three days per week, 8:45 a.m.-4:45 p.m.

Part-Time House Manager

Dependent upon schedule of events, requiring flexibility; during the season of programs, frequently Tuesday through Sunday, generally 4:00 p.m. to 11 p.m. on weekdays; noon to 4 p.m. and 4 p.m. till 11 p.m. on weekends.
Associates degree required; B.A. preferred. Two years general theatre experience or equivalent combination of arts administration training and experience desirable. Experience with guest services and patron cultivation necessary. TAMS training a plus. MS Word, Excel, and Outlook computer skills required. Friendly, outgoing personality a plus. Good organizational skills. Must work easily in a fast-paced environment. Applicant must be able to work independently as well as be a team player.
Under the direction of the Audience Services Coordinator, oversees and manages the front of house for theatre and other Folger public events, including concession sales, volunteer usher instruction, and audience management. Works to ensure a successful experience for Folger audiences, welcoming and cultivating patrons, assisting in any appropriate way to make visit rewarding. Has primary responsibility for house management public events at the Folger, including performances of Folger Theatre; Folger Consort; PEN/Faulkner and poetry events; and other events as designated.

Internship Opportunities
Many divisions of the Folger have opportunities for internships, both paid and unpaid, for undergraduate and graduate students to learn about the daily operations of an independent research library with a vigorous set of cultural and educational programs.
Internships are available with the following divisions: Central Library, Development, Education, Public Programs, and Research. Preference for Central Library internships is given to graduate students pursuing a master’s degree in Library Science or Museum Studies. For all other internships, preference is given to students pursuing academic and professional goals in the arts and/or humanities. While the majority of these internships are unpaid, this decision is left to each division’s discretion.
Central Library internship projects are available in the following areas: Acquisitions, Cataloging, Curatorial support, Digital initiatives, Exhibitions, and Reader Services. Applicants should specify their areas of interest so that applications can be forwarded to the appropriate members of staff. Please indicate whether you are interested in an unpaid internship or if you are applying for an internship / field study for course credit. Indicate a preferred start date in your application, and please submit at least 90 days in advance of that date. Note that while we accept applications on an ongoing basis, we meet on a quarterly basis to consider internships for the academic fall semester (ca. Sept. - Dec.); spring semester (ca. Jan. - May); or for full or part-time summer internships. Preference for Central Library internships is given to graduate students pursuing a master’s degree in Library Science or Museum Studies.
The Development Office is responsible for raising unrestricted and restricted gift income in support of organizational needs from individuals, corporations, foundations, and government agencies. The Development Office is not accepting applications for internships at this time.
The Folger Education Division offers unpaid internships for students interested in Theatre Education, Education Administration, and Shakespeare. Days and hours are flexible. The Education Division is no longer accepting applications for summer 2013. Applications for Fall 2013 will be accepted from July 1 through August 15, 2013.
The Division of Public Programs produces events for the general public, including theatre productions, literary readings, concerts, and tours. Public Programs will begin accepting applications for summer 2013 on April 1, 2013.
The Division of Research sponsors seminars, conferences, and workshops involving the Renaissance period for doctoral and postdoctoral level scholars, and produces Shakespeare Quarterly. Shakespeare Quarterly is not accepting applications for internships at this time. The Folger Institute will begin accepting applications for fall internships on August 1, 2013.
