Meet the First Folios

Eighteen of the Folger Shakespeare Library’s First Folios toured the United States in 2016 in First Folio! The Book That Gave Us Shakespeare, commemorating the 400th anniversary of Shakespeare’s death. Upon their return home, the traveling books, plus one understudy, were displayed in the Folger exhibition First Folio! Shakespeare’s American Tour.

The First Folio, printed in 1623, contains 36 of Shakespeare's plays and groups them into comedies, histories, and tragedies. Eighteen of these plays had never before been published and otherwise might have been lost, including favorites such as Macbeth, Julius Caesar, and Twelfth Night. Of the 235 First Folios known to survive, the Folger has 82 copies.
