Synopsis:

The duke (in the role of a friar) visits the prison and there meets Juliet, who expresses both her love for Claudio and her repentance for the sinful act that led to her pregnancy. She learns that Claudio must die the following day.

Enter Duke, ⌜disguised as a Friar,⌝ and Provost.

DUKE, ⌜as Friar⌝ 
0960  Hail to you, provost, so I think you are.
PROVOST 
0961  I am the Provost. What’s your will, good friar?
DUKE, ⌜as Friar⌝ 
0962  Bound by my charity and my blest order,
0963  I come to visit the afflicted spirits
0964 5 Here in the prison. Do me the common right
0965  To let me see them, and to make me know
0966  The nature of their crimes, that I may minister
0967  To them accordingly.
PROVOST 
0968  I would do more than that if more were needful.

Enter Juliet.

0969 10 Look, here comes one, a gentlewoman of mine,
0970  Who, falling in the flaws of her own youth,
0971  Hath blistered her report. She is with child,
0972  And he that got it, sentenced—a young man,
0973  More fit to do another such offense
0974 15 Than die for this.
DUKE, ⌜as Friar⌝ 
0975  When must he die?
PROVOST  0976  As I do think, tomorrow.
0977  ⌜To Juliet.⌝ I have provided for you. Stay awhile
0978  And you shall be conducted.
DUKE, ⌜as Friar, to Juliet⌝ 
0979 20 Repent you, fair one, of the sin you carry?
JULIET 
0980  I do; and bear the shame most patiently.
DUKE, ⌜as Friar⌝ 
0981  I’ll teach you how you shall arraign your conscience,
0982  And try your penitence, if it be sound
0983  Or hollowly put on.
JULIET  0984 25 I’ll gladly learn.
DUKE, ⌜as Friar⌝  0985 Love you the man that wronged you?
JULIET 
0986  Yes, as I love the woman that wronged him.
DUKE, ⌜as Friar⌝ 
0987  So then it seems your most offenseful act
0988  Was mutually committed?
JULIET  0989 30 Mutually.
DUKE, ⌜as Friar⌝ 
0990  Then was your sin of heavier kind than his.
JULIET 
0991  I do confess it and repent it, father.
DUKE, ⌜as Friar⌝ 
0992  ’Tis meet so, daughter; but lest you do repent
0993  As that the sin hath brought you to this shame,
0994 35 Which sorrow is always toward ourselves, not
0995  heaven,
0996  Showing we would not spare heaven as we love it,
0997  But as we stand in fear—
JULIET 
0998  I do repent me as it is an evil,
0999 40 And take the shame with joy.
DUKE, ⌜as Friar⌝  1000  There rest.
1001  Your partner, as I hear, must die tomorrow,
1002  And I am going with instruction to him.
1003  Grace go with you. Benedicite.He exits.
JULIET 
1004 45 Must die tomorrow? O injurious love
1005  That respites me a life, whose very comfort
1006  Is still a dying horror.
PROVOST  1007  ’Tis pity of him.
